History Fact: Originally inhabited by the Awori people during the 15th century. The native name for the city is Eko (Lost fans will get this city since Mr.Eko was from there…yeah, a little on the nose, right?). It’s current name comes from the Portuguese who came to the area and decided they were better at naming cities. The city was also important in the slave trade. It was a port city for slave traders until the British bombed the shit out of it. They signed a treaty that abolished slavery and then came under military protection of Britain.
Economic Fact: When automobiles became difficult to import to the city, a former Mercedes manager decided to start his own automobile company: Nord Automobiles LTD. They make eight different models at one plant in the city and are constructing a second plant.
Entertainment Fact: Birthplace of many music styles, including: Sakara, juju, fiji, and Afrobeats. Also, this city is starting to rival Hollywood for film. They have entered two movies into the Academy Awards and I think it is only a matter of time before they finally win Best International Film.
