Know Your President: Week Eighteen

Party: Republican

Fact One: Did not visit regions of the United States devastated by a Mississippi River flood, which was one of the greatest natural disasters of the era. He believed that personally visiting would do little good and that the federal government should not increase spending for flood control, instead he believed the property owners should foot the bill.

Fact Two: A supporter of civil rights for African-Americans. Did not appoint anyone to his administration who had ties to the KKK, which diminished their power in that era.

Fact Three: Signed the Indian Citizenship Act, which granted United States citizenship status to all Native Americans.

Fact Four: This president helped restructure the German debt, which was owed to European nations after the Great War. The U.S. loaned Germany money, which helped the German economy.

Fact Five: Believed that lowering taxes on the rich would spur investment, which would trickle down to society. Was not a fan of government regulation and did almost nothing in regards to anti-trust suits.

Quotes:
“It takes a great man to be a good listener.”
“Don’t expect to build up the weak by pulling down the strong.”
“We do not need more intellectual power, we need more spiritual power. We do not need more of the things that are seen, we need more of the things that are unseen.”
