Star Wars: The High Republic–Tears of the Nameless

I liked some parts of this book, but there were other parts that pissed me off…

Okay, sorry. Let me start over. I recently finished one of The High Republic YA book, Tears of the Nameless. I decided to give it a shot since it focused a good bit on Reath Silas. The book follows his research into the Nameless, plus we got more Affie, Leox, and Geode (I know some people hate Geode, but those people suck).

The Republic sends a team to capture a Nameless, while Reath heads to another planet to discover the origin of the creatures. Most of this stuff was cool. There were some great moments (particularly between the Jedi and the Jedi Hunter). I loved learning some of the history stuff. But what pissed me off? Okay, let me get to it. There will be spoilers.

The Jedi consistently act like complete morons. The Republic sends a team for a Nameless, but the Jedi cannot trust normal people to help them, so they send Master Mirro Lox and his Padawan, Amadeo Azzazzo. THEY SEND TWO JEDI TO HELP IN THE MISSION TO CAPTURE A CREATURE THAT FEEDS ON JEDI, AND MAKES THE FORCE-USER A LIABILITY IN BATTLE!!!!!! Lox and his pupil are going to deal with the Nihil while the team does their job…but why not just send more soldiers? 

Even after Master Lox dies, the team learns that the Jedi Hunter is taking some Nameless to kill Reath. Amadeo goes with them! Instead of these soldiers calling in some backup, or telling Amadeo to stay on-board the ship, while they deal with the monsters. He comes out, and then they have to protect him as well. 

Also, there was a part where Amadeo helps Reath in his research, and the young Padawan points out that the Blight and the Nameless are similar. Reath is like “whoa, I never thought of that, maybe they are connected.” No one thought there might be some connection to the mysterious Blight that Marchion Ro seems to control (or be immune to) AND the monsters that suck Force-wielders dry, that Marchion Ro also happens to control??? Seriously, Jedi are idiots.

Ugh, whatever. It was a YA novel, it was short, it had some enjoyable moments (L-77 attacking the Nameless, then caring for Ashton during the escape was excellent, I am a fan of that droid).
