2024 Golf Picks–The PGA Championship

Tomorrow is the start of the PGA Championship, the second major of the year. I did not do so well with the Masters. Granted, I did look smart taking Scottie, but everyone took him, so it was basically a battle between the other tiers. Tobe was the winner with a score of -1, he took Schefffler, Will Zalatoris, Max Homa, Akshay Bhatia, Phil Mickelson, and Jake Knapp. Adam finished in second at +1. Sean finished at +3. I was in 8th place with a +17. Yikes. It is a long season though, and it is crazy how things can flip.

Here are my picks for this week.

Tier 1:  Brooks Koepka
This was a tough pick for me. Brooks and Rory are playing great. Koepka won last year, and won his last LIV outing (I think?). McIlroy won last week, and won the last time it was at Valhalla. I hope it ends up being a battle between them. Which means they will both probably miss the cut since I am so high on them.

Tier 2:  Jason Day
I feel like Day plays well enough in majors. I do not know if has what it takes to actually win it, but he can finish in the top ten.

Tier 3:  Byeong Hun An
The third tier was so difficult. Good golfers, who either seem to fall apart in majors OR guys who have played poorly in the last few weeks. Not a great combo.

Tier 4:  Sepp Straka
Straka is one of those golfers who always ends up in like the top twenty. These tiers are more about making the cut. Safe golfers, especially with it being fairly windy on this course, and a bit long, I think we could see some plus scores that finish in the top 15.

Tier 5:  Rickie Fowler
The last time he played here? Finished in third place. Granted, that was a different Rickie Fowler back in those days. C’mon Rickie, just make the cut and finish with a respectable score.

Tier 6:  Mackenzie Hughes
Okay, this is a pick out of left field. Hughes is a Canadian golfer, and he played at Kent State. That is not all that far from Valhalla, like a five-hour drive. I bet he probably played there a few times. This season he has made 11/12 cuts. He finished 6th last week, and has a top five finish this year. I think this is his time to shine.
