Know Your President: Week Thirty-Nine

Party: Democratic

Fact One: This president would not commit United States forces to Laos to help stop the spread of communism during the Laotian Civil War, but he did allow the CIA to conduct activities to disrupt the Communist insurgents as well as recruiting the Hmong people. 

Fact Two: He began the US-Israel military alliance and his administration sold the Israeli government a weapons system.

Fact Three: This president tried to pass many domestic policies that would have been beneficial to poor people, but was defeated by a coalition of Republicans and Southern Democrats. He did manage to raise the federal minimum wage to $1.25.

Fact Four: He helped negotiate an agreement with the Soviet Union to stop testing nuclear weapons. This was a step in the right direction in deescalation between the two super-powers.

Fact Five: Fitting that today is Election Day, since this president won his election narrowly. He was the youngest president ever elected. The first president born in the 20th century. And he was the first Roman Catholic elected.

BONUS FACT: In Stephen King’s Dark Tower series, this president is mentioned many times and his death is referenced once as “the passage of the world’s last gunslinger.”
