Political Ramblings: Part 1

There is always so much political news that it is hard for me to find time to write about stuff, even though I may want to or at least have thoughts on it. So this will be a way for me to try and get through a few things here and there. I may do this each week, who knows.

The big news this week is the death of Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. She was a legend and should be remembered as a champion of liberal ideals and particularly women’s rights. Honestly, I could never do her life justice in a quick blog post.

The point of this post is to talk about the reactions I am seeing from her death and the news that President Trump will rush to nominate someone. Everyone I know that is a Democrat is saying how this is hypocritical of Republicans because of 2016.

For those that do not remember: Justice Scalia passed away in February of 2016. President Obama nominated Merrick Garland, but the Republican Senate said they would not vote because it was too close to the election. Many GOP Senators are on record as saying that a Supreme Court justice should be decided by the American people and that it should wait until after the election.

So now, we are even closer to the election and you would think those same Senators would stick to that reasoning. Come on people. Do you really think that Mitch McConnell cares whether or not we call him a hypocrite? Do you think calling Pat Toomey’s office and telling him to vote against whomever they nominate will work? It will not.

This is the problem. Democrats always think Republicans will play fair. They do not. And they do not give a shit what you think of them. That is why one of the Trump slogans is “Fuck Your Feelings.”

One silver-lining to this is that I think Mitch McConnell has little faith that Trump will win reelection. If Joe Biden wins and the Democrats take control of the Senate, then they need to play mean. Get rid of the filibuster, admit Puerto Rico & Washington DC as states, increase the court to 15…do not worry about the optics. Do not worry about what Republicans will do when they take control again. Pass laws and fix the problems in this country.

Also, if they do increase the Supreme Court to fifteen, please nominate Barack Obama.

  1. Well said and completely agree about everything the Dems should do — especially about putting Barack on the court. That would be fantastic. Even though I knew it wouldn’t matter, I emailed Toomey anyway. It made me feel a little better — at least for a little while.

    1. I am sure Pat will respond with something like “Thank you for your thoughtful email. I take my duty as Senator to the great citizens of Pennsylvania seriously and with tremendous pride, and I promise to execute my sacred duty of ____________________(insert topic here). I appreciate your recommendation and will consider these things carefully before I vote.
