Oscars 2019

I am not going to bother with setting up an Oscars pool or any kind of game, since only one person will respond (thanks Bill!). However, that does not mean I will not try it. Granted, I think I have seen even less movies this year than in previous years (which is saying something).

Before I get into my picks, I need to mention how annoyed I am about there being no host. I like watching the Academy Awards and one of the things I enjoy is the host. This idea that Kevin Hart cannot host because of tweets from a few years ago is absolutely ridiculous. Now, no one wants the job because they are afraid of what these internet detectives will discover in their past. I hate it. I will not delve too much into this again.

Okay, time for my predictions…

Best Picture
I think this is between two movies (seems to be the case every year). My guess is that Roma ends up pulling it out over Green Book.

Best Actor
Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury seems to be the safe choice here.

Best Actress
Glenn Close in The Wife.

Best Supporting Actor
Mahershala Ali in Green Room. I mean, Mahershala will win the award while the season finale of True Detective is on, which will probably win him an Emmy. How weird is that?

Best Supporting Actress
I think Amy Adams pulls an upset for her performance in Vice over Regina King.

Best Animated Feature
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is the movie I saw and it blew me away. I think it takes this one over Incredibles 2.

Best Cinematography
Roma

Best Costume Design
I think Black Panther wins this one over The Favourite.

Best Director
Alfonso Cuaron takes home his second Director trophy for Roma.

Best Documentary (Feature)
RBG takes home the prize over Free Solo.

Best Documentary (Short)
This is always a fun one to guess. I will go with Period. End of Sentence. I mean, a film about women making their own menstruation pads in India? That just sounds like an award winner to me.

Best Film Editing
Vice.

Best Foreign Language Film
This one should be pretty easy. It would be funny if Roma won best picture, but not this category.

Best Makeup & Hairstyling
Only three nominees? Seems a little weird to me. Why only three? I guess I will go with Vice since the actors honestly look like their real-life counterparts.

Best Music (Original Score)
Most things I have read seem to think that Nicholas Britell wins for If Beale Street Could Talk, but I think the Academy loves Alexandre Desplat and he takes home his third for Isle of Dogs. If you are a gambler this is the best longshot over at Bovada (+2500).

Best Music (Original Song)
I think this one is a forgone conclusion. A Star is Born is basically a sure thing. However, I would love it if “When a Cowboy Trades His Spurs for Wings” would win from The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.

Best Production Design
I will take The Favourite here, but I think it would be great if Black Panther won this category.

Best Short Film (Animated)
Bao.

Best Short Film (Live Action)
Maruerite.

Best Sound Editing
First Man is probably going to win this one. Seems like the voters love a move with rockets and explosions.

Best Sound Mixing
Someday I will remember the difference (I say this every year). I will go with Bohemian Rhapsody. A movie about amazing sound should probably win it, right?

Best Visual Effects
It seems this is really between Avengers: Infinity War and First Man. In all honesty, I think Ready Player One should be seriously considered. I thought the movie was okay, but it definitely looked amazing. Okay, enough stalling, I will take Thanos and the gang in this category.

Best Writing (Adapted Screenplay)
Spike Lee finally gets his win with BlacKkKlansman.

Best Writing (Original Screenplay)
The Favourite seems to be the best choice here, but something tells me that Green Room will take it. Ugh, I hate tough choices. Whatever, I will play it safe and take The Favourite.

Okay, those are my predictions. Feel free to make yours in the comments. And yes, I will be blowing up your Facebook feed during the broadcast.
