Decades Project: 2010s Movie–The Big Short

2015 was a great year for movies. Of all the movies that were nominated for Best Picture that year, this is the one that has stuck with me. I was totally onboard with Spotlight winning. The Martian is probably my favorite from that bunch. But The Big Short is a movie I have watched a bunch of times, and that I actually recommend to people. The movie is such a great condensed version of what happened during the housing market crash, and gives us some dire warnings about our future. 

There are some fantastic performances from Ryan Gosling to Steve Carell to Christian Bale, but also Jeremy Strong and Finn Wittrock. I think one of my favorite scenes is with Billy Magnussen and Max Greenfield (they are the mortgage broker bros) explaining how they get mortgages approved, and then sell them to banks, particularly the riskier mortgages to Carell and his team. They are bragging about it, while the team looks on at them in horror. Just a great scene.

So watch this movie if you want to learn about something that was a major part of our lives, and that we are still dealing with today.
