It has been a few years since I wrote about the Oscars. If you are friends with me on Facebook, you know that I love to comment during the awards show. I enjoy trying to guess who will win the awards, even if I have not seen that many movies each year.
This year was a return to the more normal aspects of the Academy Awards. There were no scandals (no slaps, no winner mistakes, no name mess-ups)–okay, I am sure there are some things that people will freak out about and claim as a scandal, but whatever, that is the case with everything now, screw those people. Instead, we had all of the categories, they got rid of the weird best moment award. Winners gave speeches that felt more emotional instead of as a platform for some bigger cause. Not that there is anything wrong with using the time to highlight something, but it just felt like some winners were saying this stuff because it was something they should do.
I enjoy Jimmy Kimmel as a host. I thought he did a great job, especially regarding The Slap. He made jokes, but never mentioned anyone by name. My favorite joke was when he said if anyone does attack this year, just do what they all did last year: nothing. He was definitely critical at times, but also you can tell he loves movies as well. He acknowledges the absurdity of it all, but at the same time having a reverence for it. The Tom Hanks/Austin Butler typewriter joke was a great example of that. I feel like they should just have Kimmel host every year. I mean, ABC pays his checks, they could just force him, haha.
Onto the movies. I picked 16 out of 23 correctly. That was good for second place in Sean’s pool. He had 18. I did expect All Quiet on the Western Front to win so many awards. I mean, they gave all the awards to 1917 a few years ago, I figured they were about done with WWI movies. I did not expect Black Panther: Wakanda Forever to win the costume award, since the first movie won that award as well. Ke Huy Quan and Brendan Fraser winning was excellent.
I need to watch more of these movies. I will try over the next few weeks.
