Decades Project: 1990s Music–More Alt-Rock!!!

There are so many bands that have been a huge part of my life that came from the 1990s. Songs that came out when I started to drive that I would jam out to on the radio or buying CDs from those idiotic Columbia House deals (get 25 CDs for a Penny!!! Just buy 5 at regular club price over the next three years–regular club price was like $25 hahaha). 

Now, I need to mention that I will not be posting any bands that I have written about before in other Jammin’ With Josh posts. So just because I do not mention Our Lady Peace, Live, Bush, or some other 90s band, does not mean I forgot about them, but they have been written about extensively on this site. Cool?

 The first time I gave my one friend a ride home from school (it was like the day I got my license), this song came on the radio, and he made a joke about the line “I got my own car” being about me, haha.

I was not a big Smashing Pumpkins fan early on, they played at Penn State when I was in high school, and it felt like everyone liked them because they wanted to go to the concert. I know, I am weird. But, my uncle had the Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness album, and we listened to it going to a Philadelphia 76ers game (probably around 97ish), and you know what? I dug it. I think over time, their music grew on me, and “Mayonaise” might be my favorite song by them.

People love to shit on Oasis, but (What’s the Story?) Morning Glory is one of the best albums of the 90s. I do not think there is a skippable track on it.

This song was huge during the final summer of working for my dad. It would play on the radio at least twice per day. For some reason it was one of those songs. 

Just so you are warned…this song is definitely NSFW. But how cool was it to jam out to this song in 1994? Even if you had the most open-minded parents about music (like me) this was a song they heard and were like “nope, turn it off.” Funny Dad story incoming…when he sold sunrooms, he sold one to a couple, and their last name was Reznor. My dad said the name was familiar, and the guy said something like “do you have a teenage kid, they probably listen to my nephew’s music, his band is Nine Inch Nails.” I should mention that I do not remember if it was Trent Reznor’s uncle, cousin, distant relative, but that is not important.

Crazy that this came out in 1993. Also, I never could remember who sang it. 

 Collective Soul is one of the most underrated bands. They had a bunch of hits, and could play great slow songs, but also could give you some solid rock jams. I watched a thing of them in Morocco way back in the day (probably when I was at Gannon), and they were going around playing their songs acoustic, but also if I remember correctly, they would use some traditional Moroccan instruments. It was cool hearing their stuff coming out of these different sounding instruments.

I saw these guys at X-Fest one year, they crushed it. I ended up buying a shirt (it said tie me to the bedpost on the back). I liked wearing it when I bartended because the older ladies at the bar I worked at would make plenty of comments about it (and then tip me more). Thanks Eve6!

I am going to take some shit for posting a Nickelback song, but screw everyone! “Leader of Men” is a good song. I bought this album, and then was excited for their next one. And you know what??? It was pretty damn good as well.

Stabbing Westward…whatever happened to those guys? I think they were one of those bands that I found on a soundtrack, and really enjoyed.
