Know Your President: Week Thirty

Party: Republican

Fact One: This president ordered the withdrawal of troops from a foreign country that we had been at war with for many years. The evacuation of Americans was hectic and culminated in the capital city being taken while trying to get out as many citizens and allies as possible.

Fact Two: He signed a bill that helped establish special education in the United States. He was worried that public funding for this program would be tight, but he backed it because it was something he strongly supported and believed.

Fact Three: Believed states should have the right to make a decision on abortion, but his wife was a supporter of the pro-choice movement and eventually he came around to her side.

Fact Four: He nominated John Paul Stevens to the Supreme Court. Stevens eventually sided more with the liberal bloc of the court, despite being a registered Republican.

Fact Five: He became the first sitting president to testify before Congress since Abe Lincoln.
