The Gas Issue

I AM SICK OF HEARING PEOPLE BITCH ABOUT GAS PRICES!

Seriously, what are you going to do about it? Not buy gas? Walk everywhere? Just shut up about it. The price of gas goes up, the price of gas goes down. It happens. Seriously. I am 41 year old. When I first started driving back in 1996, gas was up around $1.20ish, probably more at certain times of the year. Then a few years later it dropped significantly. I remember getting gas for $.89/gal. Now it is $4.19.

The funny thing is that people love to blame the president, who has very little to do with gas prices. Now I know, some of you will quickly mention the Keystone Pipeline, which Joe Biden canceled. Okay, cool. The Keystone Pipeline…which would not have been completed yet. So that sweet gas from Canada would not be here anyways. Also, this argument generally ignores Russia flooding the market with gas a few years ago in order to help cut into Saudi and other countries dominance.

But honestly, none of that stuff matters. I am pretty sure gas prices are just made up. And yes, I know that all prices are arbitrary, but it feels like gas prices are just crazier. Remember when there was the BP oil spill or Hurricane Katrina (and probably other gulf coast hurricanes)? Or hell, remember when Houston lost power last winter and they said it shut down oil production for a few days? The price of gas immediately spiked. The gas at stations was unaffected by those things, yet somehow it became more expensive. It would be like going to a restaurant and ordering a side of bacon for $2, then finding out there is a pork shortage and the waiter comes out to say that bacon is now $4. Yeah, I know, it’s not a perfect analogy.

Oil companies wait for any excuse to jack up prices. They will continue to push the prices up over the next few weeks until they start to see that the prices are affecting behavior. Either we will hear stories about travel being way down or a surge in hybrids/electric cars, and then all of a sudden the price of gas will come down. They will suck out as much profit as they can and when they reach a breaking point, then it will come back down. They will make it correlate with some moment in the Ukraine/Russia War (perhaps there will be a cease-fire or some peace discussions again–nothing that should actually affect the price, but something that will be a nice excuse to lower the prices back down). Yeah, I know, I feel cynical and a wee bit tinfoil hat-ish.

But if you are one of those people insisting on complaining about the gas prices, then do something about it. Buy an electric car. I swear all of the people I know bitching usually drive a giant SUV or truck. Sell it and get an electric car. Want a cool electric SUV, try a Rivian or one of the other really cool electric vehicles out there. Seriously, when my car is paid off, I am going that route. Fuck gas.
