Star Wars Rambling

I was watching Star Wars the other day, I think some channel had them all on last week. There is one thing that has always bothered me about Revenge of the Sith (okay, there are lots of things that bother me, but I will focus on one): the ending.

There are a bunch of things that happen at the end that make zero sense when you compare them to the original trilogy. Also, a few things that are just idiotic.

-Obi-Wan defeats Anakin (you know, “I have the high ground Ani!” like he is Sam Elliott in Gettysburg), he leaves him for dead. He allows his former padawan to die a slow, painful death. Why not end his suffering? Why not kill Anakin out of mercy? This comes into play in a second.

-Yoda and Palpatine fight to a draw, both are pretty weak after their epic showdown. Yoda barely escapes with his life. Palpatine declares himself emperor.

-At this point, Obi-Wan thinks Anakin is dead. He has no idea that Palpatine has rescued his former apprentice. So why do Yoda and Obi-Wan go into hiding? Why not form a plan to take down the Emperor? They have no clue they would be up against two Sith. If Yoda almost defeated him, the two Jedi should be able to defeat him. I get that they are enemies of the Empire now, but should that stop them?

-Obi-Wan decides to split the twins up and hide them from Anakin (who he thinks is dead) and the Emperor (does Obi-Wan even know whether or not Yoda defeated him or not?). He sends the girl to Alderaan with Bail Organa. Okay, that makes sense. Obi-Wan takes the boy to Tatooine and gives the child to Anakin’s step-brother. They do not even bother to change his last name. Luke Skywalker! Is that name fairly common in the Galactic Empire, like Smith or something? You mean to tell me the Emperor did not put out any kind of alerts when a Skywalker is put into some system? Like when Luke buys a speeder and has to register it? Or he sells it? What about signing him up for school on Tatooine? His name had to be on the Galactic Internet somewhere.

-So what happened when Obi-Wan is watching the news one night after arriving on Tatooine and he hears about the Emperor’s new right hand man, Darth Vader? Did Kenobi go “oh damn, maybe I should have finished him off when I had the chance.”

-And finally, what was the Jedi plan? Yoda and Obi-Wan go into hiding. They want to keep the twins safe. Wouldn’t it have been safer to take both kids to Dagobah, where both Jedi Masters could begin training the children? They just planned to spend the rest of their lives living in seclusion while the Emperor and Vader wreak havoc on the galaxy? Does not seem to me that the Jedi are very noble.

-Bail Organa sends his daughter to Tatooine to deliver a message to General Kenobi. It took that long for Bail to go “hey, maybe Kenobi and Yoda could help us with this empire problem.” Also, Bail knows that Kenobi took Luke. Was this Bail Organa’s plan, to unite the brother and sister? Was he tired of Obi-Wan and Yoda sitting on the sidelines sulking about their defeat, while his adopted daughter is out there risking her life to build the resistance? Is Bail Organa the true hero of this story?

-One last thing…in ROTJ, Luke asks Leia about her mother. She says that her mother died when Leia was young and that she remembers her being very sad. Luke says something like “I cannot remember my mother.” It was implied that Luke was split from them and that Padme lived a few years with Leia. Unfortunately, that is not what we see at the end of Episode III. Padme dies right after they are born. Neither kid should remember her.
