Best of 2024: Favorite Logan Moment

There have been some great Logan moments this year. The kid has really come out of his shell and developed a bit of a crazy personality. He can still be shy around people he has never met, but once he warms up, his true doofus nature comes out. I was nervous about him starting kindergarten, especially since he was not with his core group of friends from preschool. As summer came to an end, he was excited to start school, and you know what? He has absolutely loved school so far. He made friends in his class, still hangs out with his old friends at recess, and he does well with the lessons they are learning.

My favorite moment though came during baseball season. He played t-ball this year, even though I thought he might be ready for coach-pitch (he wanted to stay with his friends in t-ball, which is understandable). One thing that happens every year is that the t-ball coaches get requests for kids to come up for coach-pitch games. I asked Logan, and he said he wanted to do it. The first game was at the end of May. The coach sent me a text and asked if Logan would like to play on their team. He said to come a little early for batting practice.

We showed up, and the coach found us and said to head up to the cage. We got up there, and the assistant coach that was pitching was very loud and definitely very aggressive towards the kid hitting. Saying stuff like “keep that elbow down, bat up, swing through the ball!” He then looks over and sees Logan (who now looks terrified, and is starting to revert to Shy Logan). The coach says “hey, you must be Logan! Ready to take some swings? Don’t worry, I am just a loud guy, but this knucklehead is my kid, he never listens. Come on in.” Logan is not sure, so the coach goes “oh wait, I need to announce you in…NOW BATTING #3, LOOOOGGGGAAAANNNNNN!!!!!!” For some reason that made Logan laugh, and he went in and started taking swings. He literally did not hit anything during BP. The coach kept giving him pointers and being super positive.

The game started, and Logan was batting last. The team he was playing for was very good, and they hit around to Logan in the first inning. He hit a nice line drive up the middle for his first at-bat. He was a little shocked, and I had to yell like ten times to run, but he made it safely to first for his first hit. He struck out his next two ABs, and in his final time up, he hit another nice line drive that the first baseman played on a hop, and was able to get Logan out at first. After the game, the coach had the kids gather around and did a little speech to them, then he presented Logan with the game ball. I am not kidding when I say Logan carried that ball around for like three days straight. He slept with it the first night.

Logan played in more coach-pitch games throughout the season, he had some more hits. He ended up being an honorary member of the one team through the playoffs since they were short kids. I think those games really helped cement his love for baseball. This fall we decided to do a six-week hitting clinic at ERA Sports. He was one of the youngest kids there, but the program was fantastic. Sometimes it is hard to forget that he is only five.

Okay, bonus story! Least favorite moment with Logan…
He loves to play catch in the living room. I toss him a soft football, and he usually runs back and forth catching it. The one night he was wearing his cool Pikachu pajamas, and as he was running, he tripped and fell. He landed hard, and started screaming. I thought he broke his arm, or hit his head on the chair. Lindsey and I ran over to him, he could barely talk he was screaming so hard. He finally told us that it was not his arm or head, but his pee-pee. He was holding his crotch, and bawling. He then shows me, and there is a massive bruise and some swelling. The swelling eventually went down, and after a few days the bruise was gone. Definitely not a great day for Logan.
