Logan’s Baseball Regular Season

Well I am sure you all read about Payton’s softball season, and you are waiting for the post about Logan’s season. No fear, here it is!

Like Payton, Logan did two divisions this season. He was in Single-A, which is coach pitch, but he also did Double-A, which is modified kid pitch. I was nervous about him playing in AA because I was not sure if he was ready for kid’s pitching.

He ended up doing okay. He had a couple hits off kids. Funny enough, he managed to get his first hit off of a kid, the same day as Payton. The biggest thing for him was the strike zone. He is very small, and a few umpires would call a strike on a pitch that arced over his head, but landed in the catcher’s mitt. At that level, they want the kids to swing, but it was frustrating having to watch him strike out looking, or chase a high pitch because the umps were calling them. But, it did teach him to swing more, and I think by the end of the season, he realized that the majority of the kids he was facing were throwing slower than what I was throwing in the batting cage.

One of the cooler moments of the season was when his head coach allowed him to pitch for two innings. Logan got the chance during a scrimmage (or maybe it was practice), and he did…meh. But we worked on it in the yard, I actually measured it out, and made sure to sit far enough back (a mistake I made the first time we tried it). He ended up striking out two kids.

The best part of AA though was winning the championship. Logan’s team ended up in the finals against a team that beat them twice in the regular season. The boys played hard and managed to secure a victory. Logan played a good bit of second base this year, and he made a few nice plays.

Single-A was interesting this season. I was his head coach, but we ended up having softball playoffs at the same time as their playoffs, so I missed those last few games. Logan had a good year, but not the best year. When we played on the t-ball field, he really tried to swing for the fences, and would either pop it up, or just completely whiff. He had two strikeouts, which may have been more than he had last year. In the field though, he ended up becoming one of our most reliable fielders. We used him at 1B a good bit because he was able to catch when kids threw the ball to him.

His team ended up losing a heart-breaker in the semifinals against the team that won the championship. The boys fought hard all season, and they all got better and seemed to have fun, which is the most important thing at this age.

Next season Logan will just do AA. He is already hounding me about working on pitching, and I am guessing in the fall, he will do the pitching classes down at ERA.
