Shazam!

I have been excited for this movie ever since seeing the first trailer. I like the direction Warner Brothers has shifted the DCEU (should we even call it that now?). Lindsey and I went to see it the other day.

This was the first time we got a chance to do something without the kids, even it was just going to a movie and getting some food in the middle of the day. We definitely needed it. As many of you know, I try not to take my wife to movies because she falls asleep. She actually stayed awake during this one, so either it was really good or she does better at matinees.

But seriously, the movie was really good. I would say that it would be enjoyable for young kids and most certainly for any adults who are fans of Big (the movie even has a little nod to the classic Tom Hanks film). I thought Zachary Levi was great as the adult version of Billy Batson. I also really liked Asher Angel & Jake Dylan Grazer. I should probably warn that there could be some spoilers from here on out.

I thought that Mark Strong was a little underused in this movie. He is a great actor and I think they could have let him flex his acting muscles a little more as Sivana.

I saw the whole family thing coming as soon as we met them. The wizard’s words about his brothers & sisters being gone and needing seven to fill the council came back to me when they had dinner the first time and the dad has the kids bring their hands in for a prayer. It was telegraphed, but it really worked.

Lindsey was very excited to see Adam Brody. I was too. I always thought he was a funny guy (he was great in Thank You For Smoking). I did think the rest of them would get their powers in an end credit scene. Or perhaps the end of the movie would be them grabbing the staff and saying the word.

I had to look up the end credit scene. Well the first one. Mr. Mind is not a character I am familiar with….AAHHHH, BAD COMIC BOOK FAN! I enjoyed the final end scene, the Aquaman joke was pretty good.

I thought the movie was good. I look forward to a sequel. OR better yet, a team-up with Aquaman. How cool would it be to see Aquaman being all “I dig it” while chugging whiskey with Billy’s youthful naivete. They could be so fun together.

What did you think of it?
