Decades Project: 1970s Music–The Rise of Punk

The 70s were the time when bands began to experiment with the rock sound, and try to come up with a new sound. Last week we saw the beginnings of heavy metal. Today we look at the beginning of punk. I am sure people will debate the beginnings of punk rock, but no one can deny that The Clash, Sex Pistols, and Ramones are the triumvirate of power in early punk rock.

Okay, I know this song comes off an album that many folks consider to be more rock than punk, or at least more experimental than their previous albums. But this is one of my favorite songs, and this is one of the greatest albums of all-time.

All the things people associate with punk comes from the Sex Pistols. They just exude punk.

The Ramones took rock ‘n roll and stripped it down to the core and said “yeah, this is fuckin’ great.” I remember reading somewhere that before the Ramones, punk referred to a certain attitude, but not really any specific musical style, but then it quickly became associated with the Ramones distinct rawness and speed.
