Friday Five–Favorite Rom-Coms

In honor of Valentine’s Day, I thought I would do my top five romantic comedies, otherwise known as rom-coms. But you know what? It is hard to figure out what movies qualify as rom-coms. Like if you look up a list of the greatest rom-coms, you get movies like The Princess Bride or Groundhog Day. I guess I can see it (they have comedy, they have romance…it makes sense), but when I say rom-com, I mean a certain type of movie. I cannot explain it, I just know it when I see it (like that famous line about porn).
FIVE

Knocked Up is a funny movie, but has a sweetness to it, especially the growth of Ben, watching him try to be a better person.
Favorite Part: Seth Rogen and Paul Rudd high on mushrooms in Las Vegas “there are five different types of chairs in this hotel room.”
FOUR

Definitely, Maybe is one of my favorite Ryan Reynolds movies. It is super sweet, and the comedy is a little more toned down (I would say #5 is 70/30 comedy/romance, whereas #4 is probably 30/70).
Favorite Part: I love the end when Abigail Breslin is trying get Ryan Reynolds to tell April the story, and Isla Fisher is listening. It is cute.
THREE

The Wedding Singer is probably my favorite Adam Sandler movie (that could be a top five itself). I would say this movie is probably close to 50/50.
Favorite Part: Robbie making his friend do a tryout to be Julia’s limo driver. There are some other great parts, but I just love Allen Covert getting out, trying to carry the dummy, weaving through the cones. It cracks me up.
TWO

A retelling of The Taming of the Shrew with Heath Ledger, Julia Stiles, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. This movie balances the romance with the comedy quite well.
Favorite Part: So many great ones, but my favorite part is when Ledger sings “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You.”
ONE

I think You’ve Got Mail is the epitome of the rom-com. I just love Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan together.
Favorite Part: The scene when Meg and Tom agree to meet at a coffee shop. The interaction between Dave Chappelle and Tom Hanks before, and then how big of a jerk Hanks is to Meg Ryan inside.
