Josh’s College Football Rankings 2023–Week 6

Half the teams on bye, the other half making terrible coaching decisions that cost them games. This could just be a ranking of all the dumb stuff coaches did this past weekend. Oh well, time to do some ranking!

  1. Georgia (6-0)–#1–W 51-13 #23 Kentucky. I guess the Bulldogs were tired of people saying they were poised for a fall. I am pretty sure Carson Beck just threw another touchdown pass.
  2. Michigan (6-0)–#2–W 52-10 Minnesota. Such a well-balanced team. They look scarier each week.
  3. Florida State (5-0)–#3–W 39-17 Virginia Tech. The bye week helped the Seminoles out.
  4. Ohio State (5-0)–#7–W 37-17 #18 Maryland. I had Maryland ranked higher than most, and I stand by that assessment. It was close for a bit, but the Buckeye defense was just too much for the Terps. Two quality wins puts Ohio State back in the top four.
  5. Penn State (5-0)–#5–BYE
  6. Oklahoma (6-0)–#10–W 34-30 #4 Texas. What a great game! The Sooners pulled off the upset, and got some sweet for last year.
  7. Washington (5-0)–#8–BYE
  8. Oregon (5-0)–#9–BYE
  9. Texas (5-1)–#4–L 34-30 #10 Oklahoma. Not dropping Texas too much, I think 3-9 is probably a bit of a toss-up.
  10. Alabama (5-1)–#11–W 26-20 Texas A&M. May not be pretty, but they keep winning.
  11. USC (6-0)–#6–W 43-41 3OT Arizona. The Trojans want to lose. They keep winning, but this lack of defense will catch up to them.
  12. UNC (5-0)–#14–W 40-7 Syracuse. Drake Maye had a monster game, reminding folks that he is still one of the best QBs in the country.
  13. Louisville (6-0)–#25–W 33-20 #12 Notre Dame. The Cardinals looked dominant in the second half against the Irish. They play like that the rest of the year, the ACC could become very interesting.
  14. Ole Miss (5-1)–#16–W 27-20 Arkansas. Quietly winning games. Sneaky Top 15 team.
  15. UCLA (4-1)–HM–W 25-17 #13 Washington State. The Bruins took down Wazzu. Pac-12 shooting for chaos this year.
  16. Duke (4-1)–#20–BYE
  17. Tennessee (4-1)–#21–BYE
  18. Utah (4-1)–#22–BYE
  19. Washington State (4-1)–#13–L 25-17 UCLA.
  20. Oregon State (5-1)–#17–W 52-40 California. They gave up forty to Cal…
  21. Kansas (5-1)–HM–W 51-22 UCF. I swear I keep bouncing the Jayhawks in and out of the rankings. I like Jalon Daniels (he was out with an injury, and they still dropped 50 on the Knights).
  22. Notre Dame (5-2)–#12–L 33-20 #25 Louisville. First two-loss team to make the rankings. The Irish are still a good team, but one more loss, and they might be looking for a new coach.
  23. LSU (4-2)–NR–W 49-39 #19 Missouri. Before I rank some undefeated G5 school, I have to consider the Tigers.
  24. Maryland (5-1)–#18–L 37-17 #7 Ohio State. I still believe this team is the 4th best team in the Big Ten.
  25. Missouri (5-1)–#19–L 49-39 LSU. Time to rebound against Kentucky and South Carolina before facing Georgia.

Honorable Mention
JMU (5-0)–HM–BYE
Air Force (5-0)–HM–BYE
WVU (4-1)–WL–BYE
Tulane (4-1)–WL–BYE
BYU (4-1)–WL–BYE

Watch List
We need to keep an eye on the two losers this, and see how they bounce back from their losses.
Kentucky (5-1)–#23–L 51-13 #1 Georgia. They got absolutely destroyed. Need to earn my respect back into the Top 25.
Miami (5-1)–#15–L 23-20 Georgia Tech. They cost me money by not taking a knee. #FireMarioCristobal
Wisconsin (4-1)–NR–W 24-13 Rutgers. Is this the best team in the Big Ten West? I guess.
Now we have some teams to watch because they are winless.
Sam Houston State (0-5)–NR–L 21-16 Liberty. I want K.C. Keeler to get his first win.
Nevada (0-5)–NR–BYE. They lost to their FCS opponent: Idaho. Yikes.

Alaska Airlines Field at Husky Stadium

Lots of great games next week. And we are starting those Tuesday games, so we have games almost every night. This Tuesday we have Coastal Carolina at Appalachian State, which has been a good battle the last few years. Then we have Liberty at Jacksonville State. Both teams are off to nice starts. #25 Missouri at Kentucky should be a good game, both teams have something to prove. I also think #15 UCLA at #20 Oregon State could be a fun game to watch as well.

My big three games though?
Miami at #12 UNC
#11 USC at #22 Notre Dame
#8 Oregon at #7 Washington

The Hurricanes need their coach to not be an idiot, but honestly, I hope Drake Maye throws for 500 yards and 6 TDs. USC will not play defense, so Sam Hartman may have a thousand yards himself. But the game we all want to see is the Ducks and Huskies. Bo Nix vs. Michael Penix. Is this the first time two quarterbacks with names ending in X faced off? I mean, aside from last year.
