Spider-Man: Brand New Day

Logan and I went to see the newest Spider-Man movie on Friday night. So cool to be able to have a superhero movie buddy. We both liked the movie, when we left Logan started telling me all about his theories for the next movie. It was such a great dad moment.

Okay, so here are my actual thoughts on the movie…spoilers from here.

-I was nervous about the idea of there being so many villains in this one. The trailers showed The Hand, Scorpion, Hulk, Punisher…how were they going to navigate all of these storylines? Fortunately, some of the villains were just told through some quick montage scenes. The rest were integral to the story.

-I thought Sadie Sink was fantastic as…geez people, I said there are spoilers. Are you sure you want to read this? Okay, I warned you…Jean Grey. I liked how she used her telepathic power to jump into minds, and then when she went full power, we saw some of her scary level power. I thought for sure the ending would be of Professor X showing up to take Jean to his new school. But maybe that is where her trip on the bus will end up.

-Hulk vs. Spider-Man was exciting. I liked the idea of Hulk taking over, and we see him get even larger than when he is Professor Hulk. I was hoping Hulk would remember Peter (I think that was in the comics, right? Hulk remembers Peter, but Banner does not). But then, I realized that Hulk and Peter never actually met in the movies. Hulk was not in Civil War. He would not come out in Infinity War. And Professor Hulk was in Endgame. 

-Punisher…always great having Frank in anything. Not going to lie, I loved the ending. When Spidey wakes up in the hospital and Frank is there, and says that it was the bravest thing he ever saw, then starts to cry. Peter making fun of him, and the two of them admitting to being friends. 

-I loved that Peter and Ned will still be friends (and I am guessing that Ned was able to remember him because he has some magical skills–or the power of the friendship). I liked that by the end, Peter was finally getting some closure with MJ. It sucks that she does not feel that way about Peter, but I think he will at least be ready to meet someone else. Or maybe he can pursue Jean, since they seemed to have a moment inside his mind (plus she did keep him alive). 

-The only thing I did not like was the whole arachnid/human metamorphosis that was happening. I mean, I liked that Spidey gets an ability upgrade. I liked that it was something he had to contend with, but I just felt like the story was rushed and wrapped up too quickly. I would have liked it to be an even bigger part of the plot. It just felt like at the end, he goes “I am Peter and Spider-Man” and he just quickly adapts to his new abilities. Also, it would have been cool to see him let go completely and fight the Hulk. Like, we see him just mop the floor with Hulk, and people become truly afraid of Spider-Man. 

-The end-credit scene seems to imply that Spidey will be heading to space, again. Which I am guessing means he will be in Avengers: Doomsday. I cannot wait until December!
