Know Your President: Week Twenty-One

Party: Democrat

Fact One: The Indian Removal Act. This president pushed Congress to pass this act and signed it into law. He  believed that southern Native Americans (Cherokee, Muskogee, Choctaw, Chickasaw, and Seminole) needed to be forcibly removed from Georgia, Florida, and Alabama and relocated to the western territory. Around 4,000 Cherokee died on the “Trail of Tears.”

Fact Two: Waged a war against the national bank and eventually when it’s charter was up, he convinced Congress to not renew it. This caused New York City to rise as the financial center of the country instead of Philadelphia as it had previously been.

Fact Three: Wanted to abolish the Electoral College and establish term limits for presidents. He was unsuccessful.

Fact Four: Did not want party leaders to assume roles in his cabinet and instead appointed businessmen. Many of his members ended up resigning because of political infighting and gossip.

Fact Five: He was the first president to have an assassination attempt leveled at him. A man tried to shoot him, but both of his guns misfired. The president beat the man with a cane, while Davy Crockett disarmed and restrained the would-be assassin.
