What a Day!

It is funny the things that will trigger a memory. Payton was reading a book last night and the final line was “what a day.” It made me think of the classic nu-metal band, Nonpoint and their song “What a Day.” I then started thinking about different concerts and remembered seeing Nonpoint at the Bryce Jordan Center.

It was back in 2001, during my first semester at Penn State. I went with a friend to see Fuel, Sevendust, and Nonpoint at the BJC. I was nervous to see Fuel because that summer I saw them at X-Fest in Pittsburgh, and lead singer Brett Scallions was fairly hammered by the time they came onstage. I think they were the final act. He was slurring and stumbling around the stage.

Fortunately, he was more sober at Penn State, and Fuel put on a fantastic show. One of the great early traditions at the BJC was the headlining band receiving a Penn State jersey and usually performing a song in it. Do they still do this? I remember there being a hallway with pictures of all the performers in those jerseys. Or maybe I made that up? Anyways, I remember Scallions rocking his PSU jersey and saying how he was honored to be here since the band formed in Harrisburg.

I also saw Sevendust a few different times, and they always put on a good show. I do not remember much about Nonpoint, just that they played “What a Day.” Which was probably the only song anyone knew. I guess it had some staying power though since whenever someone says what a day, I think of that song.
