The Dinosaur Princess

I need to be honest here. I did not like the majority of this book. I feel bad saying that because I just learned that Victor Milan passed away earlier this year. I really enjoyed the first two books and this one had a really great final third, but the first two-thirds was pretty boring. I wonder what will happen with the series now. Will someone come in and finish it? Or will this just be one of those things that never gets a conclusion?

I loved the ending, especially the battle with the assassins and the escape from the city. The dinosaur fight between the guards and Rob & Karyl was one of those edge of your seat type battles. I love the way that Milan imagines dinosaur battle tactics, which seem plausible. I also really enjoyed the way we delve deeper into the fae & Gray Angels. It looks like my theory is probably somewhat right. This is not Earth (obviously) and the Creators are probably people from Earth, who created the Angels as some sort of caretakers. The fae are the original inhabitants.

I really enjoyed Melodia training to become a dinosaur knight. I thought that was when things became interesting for her character. I felt like the first part of the book was a little too focused on her wallowing in despair. I definitely did not enjoy the whole side story of Jaume and his knights going after Montz. It took way too long and it never really went anywhere. Except for us to learn that there is magic out there. Remember, most of the chase was spent finding out that there so many traitors inside the empire, but nothing is done about that particular problem. Jaume never mentions it to the emperor (or if he did, no one seemed too worried about it).

I will do a casting call for this book sometime soon. It would definitely be great to see a battle between the Duke & Snowflake against Karyl & Shiraa. When Snowflake is down and Karyl recognizes the hurt in Falk’s eyes and feels bad for his foe…damn, that made me love Karyl even more. Granted, it did not stop Karyl from stabbing Falk in the mouth.

Anyways, I am sad that Milan is no longer with us to keep writing this series. I will definitely check out some of his other works.

  1. Dude, the best dinosaur moment ever wasn’t in Jurassic Park. It was in the seventh Dresden Files book. You need to read that series. Each book gets better than the last one. I always read each of those books in about a week because I can’t put them down.
