Penn State Sports Wrap-Up (2/16-2/22)

Baseball
The Nittany Lions had a rough start to the season this past weekend, going 1-3. They lost 10-1 to Monmouth, defeated LIU 14-3, then lost to them 11-8. They finished up with a loss to Northeastern 8-1. On a positive note, Matt Wood has started the season off hot, hitting 6 for 14 with 3 home runs.

Softball
The Lady Lions played well at the Panther Invitational, going 3-1. They had wins against Cleveland State (4-2) and FIU (7-0, 10-0). Bailey Parshall tossed the first perfect game since 2005 for PSU. They lost to Buffalo 5-3. They improved to 6-3.

Basketball
Men: The men followed up their big upset over Michigan State with a nice win against Minnesota, 67-46. It looked like things were turning around and we could be poised for a nice winning streak, but then they lost to Maryland 67-61. It may be a struggle to make the NIT. They are now 11-13 (6-10).
Women: They ended their losing streak by beating Nebraska (83-76) and MIchigan State (79-71). Their record improved to 11-15 (5-11).

Wrestling
Ended the dual meet season with a monster victory against Rider, 45-0. They finished the season 17-0 and ranked #1 in the country. They prepare for the Big Ten tournament in two weekends.

Gymnastics
Women: At the Big Five Meet, the Lady Lions scored 196.125. Jessica Johanson scored a 9.9 and won the vault. Isabella Salcedo also scored a 9.9 (her third of the year) on the floor.
Ranked #25

Fencing
Six of the Penn State fencers traveled to Utah to compete in the Junior Olympics. I have zero clue if this was connected to the NCAA. I know that the Nittany Lions are good and yet none of the fencers finished all that high, so I am guessing this is more independent.
Men are ranked #3, Women #7

Volleyball
Men: Defeated Saint Francis 3-0 this week. They improved to 10-3 (5-0).
Cole Bogner was named the EIVA Offensive Player of the Week
Ranked #4

Hockey
Men: Dropped a pair to Minnesota, 3-1 & 6-4. Dropped to 14-17-1 (5-16-1-2)
Women: Took on RIT this week. They tied 2-2 and then won the second game 2-0. They are now 18-9-5 (8-3-3-2). Ranked #14

Lacrosse
Women: Lost their season opener to #19 Drexel, 12-8. They are 0-1 and dropped for the Top 25.
Men: Lost two this week. Vermont defeated the Nittany Lions 16-10, then Saint Joseph’s beat them 15-13. They are now 1-3

Swimming
Women: Finished 10th at the Big Ten Championships. I have no clue about swimming. The Nittany Lions had seven top 24 finishes. They had 15 NCAA B standards, whatever that means?

Tennis
Men: Two big wins this week for the men. First they beat Delaware 6-1, then they defeated St.Bonaventure 7-0. They improved to 6-3 on the season.
