Heavier Than a Mountain

The third book of Olan Thorensen’s Destiny’s Crucible was a bit of a letdown. The premise of this series is definitely cool and Thorensen is a good writer. Unfortunately there are some problems that just make the book a bit boring for me. The story of Yozef figuring out ways to stop the Narthani from taking over his adopted island is cool. I enjoy the ways he uses the current era’s technology and develops new things with his scientific knowledge.

I especially enjoy the mystery of who brought the humans and other species to the planet. I like that he found a piece of advanced technology and wants to investigate this mystery more. I also like the changes the Watchers made to his body (advanced healing nanobots and his memory is expanded).

I dislike how it just so happens that Yozef was a huge war games nerd and read tons of books on military tactics and history. And not just those topics about warfare, but he also knows a ton about the weaponry and creating weapons more advanced than the planet has at that period. You can tell that Thorensen has a military background (as well as science).

I will continue with this series because the premise is so good. But if the next one ends up being boring, I will probably just stop reading and look for some recaps online.
