Oscars 2020

Like last year, I will not set up a pool or any kind of contest (unless there is a huge desire for something). However, I will make my predictions and I think this year I have seen a few more movies than the past few years, but still not too many. Here we go!

Best Picture
This is a two movie race. Either 1917 or Parasite will be the winner. Unless something crazy happens due to the way they actually vote (I think it is very similar to ranked-choice voting). The Academy has looked bad the past few years due to their lack of diversity. They may give the award to Parasite in order to assuage some of those concerns. I did not see either film, so it is hard for me to guess. I will take Parasite because I have heard good things from a few friends.

Best Director
I think it is always weird when a director wins this one, but does not win Best Picture. However, even if Parasite wins, I think Sam Mendes gets the nod here.

Best Actor
Joaquin Phoenix for his role in Joker. He was fantastic in that movie and it was one of the few movies I saw this year. I think this one is a lock.

Best Actress
Renee Zellweger is the favorite in this one, but I think Saoirse Ronan wins for Little Women. I do not have a reason, just think this would be a good category for a big upset.

Best Supporting Actor
Brad Pitt is looking like the best bet here. However, do not underestimate Tom Hanks. I think he could pull the upset here. But I will play it safe and take Pitt. Also, I hope they use the Bruce Lee scene from Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

Best Supporting Actress
I think Margot Robbie wins this one. Laura Dern is the favorite, but I think Robbie picks up the win. I would not be surprised at all if Kathy Bates sneaks in there though.

Best Original Screenplay
This is a tough one. I think voters will swing toward QT here. They love movies about themselves. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood is a love story to the olden days of Hollywood.

Best Adapted Screenplay
Will the Academy give this one to Jojo Rabbit? I do not think so, instead I think they give it to Little Women

Best Animated Feature
My guess is Toy Story 4.

Best Animated Short
Sister…yeah, like I have even heard of any of these films.

Best Cinematography
1917
seems to be the easy choice here.

Best Costume Design
Little Women. I mean, period pieces get the Academy all hard. Frilly dresses and lots of lace, oh yeah, this is an easy win.

Best Documentary Feature
I have not seen any of these. I will throw out a guess here and take American Factory.

Best Documentary Short
Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You’re a
Girl)

Best Film Editing
Parasite

Best International Film
Parasite

Best Makeup and Hairstyling
Joker. I think this is an interesting one. I mean, the favorite seems to be Bombshell, which is probably a good bet, but the look they created for Phoenix was such a strong visual.

Best Original Score
I will keep taking Alexandre Desplat. I think I made a big guess of him last year and ended up losing, but I think he has it this year with Little Women.

Best Original Song
“Into the Unknown”…only because Payton would kill me if I didn’t pick it. Hopefully they give John Travolta a chance to say Idina Menzel correctly this time…

Best Production Design
I think Once Upon a Time in Hollywood wins this one. When you watch the movie, you really do feel like you are being transported back to 1969.

Best Sound Editing
I still have no clue what the hell this award and the next one celebrate. I will take 1917 because war movies are always full of loud sounds and the Academy loves that shit.

Best Sound Mixing
Same as above, haha.

Best Visual Effects
I always hate this category. As much as I loved Endgame, I do not think there was anything all that insane visually. 1917 probably has the most intriguing effects, things that you would not consider that difficult, but that if you watch a behind the scenes, you find it out it was almost impossible. I feel like it is between those two movies. Ah, what the hell, I will Lion King for the big upset of the night.

Best Live Action Short Film
I will take Saria. Seems like a good choice (haha, I have no clue).

Feel free to comment your picks!
