How Did We Do?–2024 Baseball Predictions
Ryan stepped up last year and helped me with baseball predictions. So the question is, how did we do?
Not good!
Ryan picked 5/16 American League teams (Rays, Royals, Tigers, White Sox, and Mariners). I was also 5/16 (Rays, White Sox, Astros, Mariners, and Rangers). I picked one of the AL division winners. The National League was much uglier…Ryan went 2/16 (Dodgers and Rockies), while I went 3/16 (Dodgers, Rockies, and Reds). That is bad.
Okay, but we probably did good with our playoff brackets? Nope. We both had the Dodgers in the NLCS, but I think that was an easy one to predict. We did each get an award right: Ryan predicted Paul Skenes would win the ROY (I took Jackson Merrill who finished second) and I took Aaron Judge to win the MVP. And finally, I ended up closer to the Pirates record…they finished 76-86 (I said 79-83, while Ryan thought 88-74).
And finally, we have my final prediction. I decided to go down the conspiracy theory route, and predict that the owners would conspire against the Dodgers to make sure they did not win the World Series…
So where is my prediction? The Dodgers will not win the World Series. In fact, they will not make the World Series, and they may not even win their division. I think a team spending the money they have spent this off-season to buy a championship will further hurt the game (or at least, I think there are a contingent of owners who probably believe that). Fans hate seeing teams buy a ring. They love when a small market team does well.
Yeah, I was wrong about the Dodgers winning it all. Hell, the World Series ended up being the Yankees and Dodgers. I still believe there are owners who would actively manipulate the game to get what they want (in this case it would be a salary cap, which would benefit the owners greatly). But, I do not think it happened in this case.
It was fun doing the predictions with Ryan, hopefully he joins me again this year. Maybe we can do better…
