Decades Project: 60s/70s Bonus Edition!

My little project hit a tough spot: a new month started on a Saturday, how do I overcome this dilemma? I contemplated just having a 60s song and 70s movie. But then I thought about combining them into a fun bonus post. And then while writing about Bob Dylan last week, I realized the perfect thing!

Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid! Yes, the 1973 classic Western directed by Sam Peckinpah. I have only ever seen the director’s cut (or maybe it is known as the original version). But I guess when it was released, the studio cut many scenes against Peckinpah’s wishes. It was considered a critical and commercial failure, but when the original version was released in the 1980s, people realized it was great.

Now for the music part. Bob Dylan did the soundtrack, and had a part in the movie. One of the biggest Dylan songs came from that movie. This song has been covered by so many people…

I would say the most famous version comes from Guns N’ Roses…

Here is a little known fact about this film. Dylan wrote a song called “Rock Me Mama”, also known as “Wagon Wheel” which was covered by Darius Rucker. If you do not know the history, Old Crow Medicine Show heard the song on a Dylan bootleg. Ketch Secor would rework the song, but he and Dylan came to an agreement to share authorship. Pretty cool, right? So if not for this film, Darius Rucker would not have had his huge country hit…
